    Hi Bruno.

I can't read the right kanji above the star; left kanji is "idea/thought" like or [both pronounced kinen: prayer or commemoration]

    Other side:

    重兵
    第八大隊
    池田

I'm guessing at the first kanji. I found a compound 軽重 keijuu/Keichou (relative importance/seriousness; relative weight) ????

    [?] heavy soldier
    8th Company
    Ikeda [surname]

It is probably for a transport soldier in the 8th Battalion (8th Division). Most likely given pre-1937 before the 8th Transport Battalion was expanded into a regiment.

As George already said, it is 輜重兵(しちょうへい), transport troops.

Okay ... okay ... okay .... the "light" suddenly went on inside my head!

The kanji above the star is, in fact, "kinen" -- Commemoration.

I stumbled over the radical that looked like a tree to me. Now, I see it is actually "thread". Sheesh! I feel like I was hit with the "idiot stick."
