    Variant Naval Canteen IJN

    Greetings everyone,

I thought I would start this post to see if there is any new information on these canteens(pictured on left). The canteen below has provenance of coming from Okinawa. Has a name tag I believe, and very interesting reinforced padding along the outside of shoulder strap.

From what I've heard over the years is they might have been canteens discovered in china and then used by the Japanese Navy? Id like to learn more about this type of canteen.

    Hi Michael-san,

The left canteen is an early IJN canteen (Prewar). They are harder to find.

The right one is the more common IJN canteen (final pattern). Still a nice example.

    Regards,
    Taka

      Right canteen number 7071:
      七〇七一

      Left canteen:
      2810-C
      Sonoda [surname]

      二八一〇 は
      園田

      ------
      いろは [iroha]
The "ha" is a counting method (i-ro-ha) using a Japanese poem that uses each of the entire syllabary once. In this case, は, it indicates "C."

Sherlock Holmes' residence on Baker Street could be, in Japanese, 二二一 ロ [221 ロ]

Mike, yes the ones pictured are early Naval Canteens that had cups at the buttom. The first one you pictured I believe is a Chinese canteen most likely used by the Japanese Navy. I have seen several of these with IJN markings indicating naval use. Maybe captured and reissued? Nice Canteens

          David.

            Hi Micheal-san,

Yes, they are the early ones and the toughest ones to obtain (at least in Japan)! I'm still searching one but haven't seen one in any condition ,yet.

            Regards,
            Taka

I also agree that first canteen is Chinese. The story was the Japanese captured these during China campaign & were used by Japanese navy. Perhaps as an auxiliary canteen or common war souvenir
