    四明会者前通り風俗

four sex industry workers being paraded through the street.
[Not 100% accurate translation, but close enough.]

      Caution.

I'm not too confident with the machine translator (Google Translate) I've been fiddling with ....

I can't find 明会者 in my Nelson's Kanji Dictionary .... the closest it gets is "Wise" and "association" and "person" .... individual kanji, not the three-word phrase.

So I don't REALLY know what he's written. Maybe three former members of the Ming dynasty? Ming is 明.

With that said, they do have a similar demeanor of shame -- similar to the women "collaborators" whom the French shaved then paraded through the streets.

        I'm STILL not happy ......

        Hmmmmm....

        明会
[there are extra strokes in "sha" ....]

        So .... it might be
        明会
... but I don't think the handwriting matches this kanji either

I guess Taka-san is taking the weekend off? He's got a lot of work to un-do all my mistakes on your photograph captions!!!

It's 8:00 a.m, and I have to fly over Beijing for a business trip. Will be back on Sunday night......

          Regards,
          Taka

In this case it probably means 風俗 as in "manners and customs" not "sex industry".

              Hi Walter,

The dictionary gave both definitions; I chose the salacious one!

So, do you think it is saying "four members of High Society walking down the street" ??

              I'm still confused.

              Thanks!!

四明公省前通り would probably mean 'The street in front of [Shimei] Public Ministry.' The latter may refer to a ward office or something like that.

And Walter is right about the last two kanji.

Thanks Rich!!! I feel so stupid right about now ......

How long have you been in Japan now? I'll retire in three years and will be moving to Tokyo or Sapporo (probably Tokyo). My Japanese/kanji will improve thereafter!

No reason to feel stupid about mistaking kanji. I puzzle over them almost every day, even though I have been here 20 years!
