Just got this flag and has lots of writng! Can anyone read and tell me if its regular good luck sayings or what? Always like to know what they say as very interesting!

Except for the heading at the top and the large letters at the 4 o'clock position that say BANZAI, all others are names. Many named Yamamoto and Sakai.

Banzai 萬歳
Yamamoto 山本
Sakai 酒
Sakai 坂井 [a different family]

Question for Guy.

How common are those two names? Reason I ask is because they are sometimes found on post war fakes due to their association with Saburō Sakai and Isoroku Yamamoto.

I'm not questioning the authenticity of this flag in particular but ask in a more general sense. Are they the Smith and Jones of the eastern world?

Hi Stu -- they are very common names. According to one database I checked, Yamamoto is the 7th most popular surname in Japan, and Sakai trails at 64.
