    My First Japanese Helmet

I got this helmet today and would like to know if it is genuine, which I think it is. Is it Army or Navy? The star is missing and the chin ties are about 18" long and not stitched at the ends. The liner has some splits and is a little fragile. What would be a fair value for it without the star. If a star was added, would it be worth doing so, or would it not be cost effective?

Army helmet. Note outline of star insignia.

Seems like it should be worth at least $300.00 as is in my opinion. I have had a few. Nice helmet.

I would say at least in the $350-500 range. Original helmet stars are available, but watch out for reproductions. The origonals have square end tabs that fit in the helmet while the repros are rounded.
                Best,

In the late 70's and early 80's a guy in Tokyo named T.Kondo had these fake stars(they were sold as fake made just like orig. with the square ends but were a little thinner than the orig. ones.He also had the naval anchor and mum ones that looked and had the feel as the orig. ones have.

Just to add more confusion to the discussion, my original army stars have rounded ends and the original navy ones have square ends. I have also seen reproductions with with both square and rounded ends.

Best bet is to keep your eye on eBay, original stars do pop up time to time.

They do pop up, and they can go pretty high when the bidding gets heated.

Sounds like a lot of confusion over exactly how you distinguish originals from reproductions. Good Luck.

Chances of you finding an original star that closely matches the paint on the helmet would be extremely difficult.
