Well, whatever it was, it included a "Firing tube" 発射管 a hose 蛇管, an oil gauge 油量計, and something else I can't make out.
      Flame thrower parts?

I think the GI added the red paint, probably to cover the Japanese makings as he was only interested in the box as a way to ship home his souvenirs.

                一〇〇式火焔発射機

                TYPE 100 FLAMETHROWER CASE!!!

                一〇〇式火焔発射機

I found it!! Two hours searching around and I finally found an image of the Japanese flame thrower shipping crate! HERE

The site identifies the writing as

                一〇〇※ 火※※射機

Interesting that they could not make out those two kanji.

                The website calls it

                日本軍の百式火炎放射器の格納箱
Storage box for the Japanese Army Type 100 flamethrower.

The Japanese used 2 types of flamethrowers, the type 100 and the type 93, which were very similar to each other. The main difference is the type 100 had a 35 inch lance and was ignited by firing a blank cartridge at the nozzle while the type 93 had a longer 47 inch lance that was ignited by a heated wire. Because the identifying marking on yours has been painted over, you should be able to check the length and determine which one you have.
All the boxes for these that I have seen were stripped out and did not have the interior blocks, so it is nice to see a picture of one complete.
                      Hope this helps.
