    Japanese Signed Tiger Flag

After seeing a few posts of Japanese flags I thought id take a moment to share mine and ask for some help in translation of the flag. Id greatly appreciate it.

This was brought back by a US veteran in the 33rd Division. He had taken this flag during the battle of Luzon.

Its my my personal favorite flag in my collection and ive had it properly framed. Acid free paper backing and Ultra Ray resistant glass to preserve the dignity of this great flag.

The artwork of the tiger is in such nice detail. There are also various shrine stamps throughout the flag.

Am I correct that the top reads "May your military fortunes be long lasting"?

Appreciate you taking a look and thanks for any assistance.

    Kind Regards, Michael Sweeney

      Hi Michael,

That's a great flag. I've been looking for a tiger flag for my own collection for years now.

Can you tell me if you have the flag sewn to the backing? I'm in the process right now of overhauling my flag collection. Some I will frame and I'd like to know more about the method you chose.

      Regards,
      Stu

Thank you Taka-San and Guy-San. Thank you also for the kind words gentleman, appreciate that .

Taka San would this be the last name of the soldier as well ?

As for the framing question. When I received the flag it had a mesh back holding the flag together . It's hard to see from the photos but this flag was originally brought back from the war shredded . ( on a side note: I visited the New York State flag restoration project on a tour by the Company of Military historians . They were repairing civil war regiment flags with the same type of mesh backing to hold the flags into one place. Great tour! ). I asked for the framer to not tack or stitch it to the back of frame but to lay it airtight against the glass. As far as I know and requested the flag is being held in place from matting and pressure of glass. This framing wasn't cheap but it was certainly worth it .

I was told be a textile conservator who mounted my flags by tack stitching on acid free stretched muslim that no fragile fabric should be wedged or sandwiched up against the glass. There should be air space between glass & fabric/ flag

Just asked my father how he had it done.

Tacked in corner under matting .

                  Acid free paper backing .

Jareth your correct its not actually against the glass.
                  There is spaceing.

Jareth what is stretched Muslim? A type of acid free paper ?

                    松勝
                    Norimatsu Masaru

                    Alternate surname pronunciation: Joumatsu
                    Alternate given name pronunciations:

                    (かち) Kachi [surname, given name]
                    (かつし) Katsushi [given name]
                    (しょう) Shou [given name]
                    (しょうみん) Shoumin [given name]
                    (すぐり) Suguri [surname, given name]
                    (すぐる) Suguru [surname, given name]
                    (すぐれ) Sugure [surname, given name]
                    (つよし) Tsuyoshi [male given name]

Today Norimatsu's "nori" is simplified to .

The large vertical kanji on the right:

                      同笠村竹之内

                      Dōri-mura Takenouchi

Dōri-mura is a village [mura = village], Take-no-uchi [sometimes just Takeuchi"] is a surname. I'm guessing it says "Takenouchi of Dōri-mura [to:] Norimatsu Masaru."

                        Sumimasen, Guy-san.

The first word would be (Can be prounced as Muku, Muki, Mukau, Kou, Kyou, Mukeru, Mukou, Mukai, Hisa, Muka, Muke,) - Direction, or to someone or thing, towards.

In this case would be 向笠村竹之内 (Mukasamura Takenouchi) - Mukasamura is a town in Shizuoka Prefecture, Takenouchi is the last name of the receiver.

Ahhhhhhh!!!! That part I didn't know! It DOES make sense.

Thanks for your instruction, Taka-san, I really appreciate it.

And -- since Takenouchi is the recipient's name .... who is 乘松勝? Would that be the gifter's name?
