Unknown Japanese Mark on U.S. M1 Helmet

This US Navy M1 helmet is a recent pickup of mine. I'd like to get some help on what I presume is a Japanese character due to it being a navy lid. There also appears to be initials in red paint on the inside of the helmet but I doubt it is Japanese. The only reason I ask is because the first letter somewhat resembles a Japanese character.

    Thanks in advance,

    Mike

        Interesting helmet.

Is the M1 fix bale or swivel bale?

Could be a member of G.H.Q., translator, or issued to early J.S.D.F.

I have a M-43 Jacket with G.H.Q. stenciled at the back, with a Japanese individual' s name sewed with red thread on the collar.
