Hello folks. This was another item amongst the larger group of Japanese items I picked up last week. According to the vets notes, this oval disk was meant to be sewn onto a uniform (via the two small holes, one on each side), as a form of identification??? Can anyone shed some more light on this item and its possible meaning and / or use? It measures 2 1/8 inches in length, 1 3/8 inches in height. it's blank on the reverse and seems to be made out of some sort of flexible celluloid. Thank you in advance for any information.

Milton,
Here is one of mine that is very similar to yours. They are Name badges that were sewn on to the tunic either above or on the pocket. Mine is named to "Sakura" with "Engineer" written on the right. It was aquired as a souvenir from the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal. There are many variations of these types of name badges worn by civilians and military (indicated with rank etc). Hope this helps.

桜井
it means "Cherry Well"
The smaller kanji:
エ務
I'm not sure of the pronunciation of this as a compound word ... maybe "Ko mu"
Individually, エ means Engineer and 務 means "Duty/Affairs/Tasks"

Hi Milton-san,
That' s a IJA/IJN celluloid made name tag.
Here is one example:
Identification tag of Ship Combat Engineer (IJA).
The yellow insignia is for Ship Combat Engineer.
Owner' s last name was 伊島- Ijima (Pronounce as "E"jima)
Right side wrote 水上 (Suijyou) - Above water
I' m afraid this individual was part of the a seaborne kamikaze.
水上特攻 (Suijyou Tokkou) - Above Water Special Attak
