    Unusual japanese sword

I have been told that the sword is a temple presentation sword with old blade. I have tried to photo the tang but all but impossible to get a good picture. I have included a couple of the best. Any new or better information would be appreciated.

                        Hello Harvey,

That's an interesting piece. Not something I'm qualified to comment upon beyond saying that I believe the double edged style is referred to as a "ken".

                        Regards,
                        Stu

Stu is correct in his identification of this ken. The form of the ken is an ancient style used by warrior Buddist monks. This blade is later than that era. The form of the ken is often found carved on a blade as decoration. It is quite likely this blade was mounted and given as a gift to a Shinto Shrine or Buddist temple. They are unique and not seen often. Among Japanese sword collectors they are not that popular.
I would like to see a picture of the full tang of the blade. Too often only signatures are shown by novices not realizing that the shape and condition of the full tang can also tell a story.

Thanks for posting these pictures. The tang has a dry look with what appears to be the leftovers of fire shale indicating that at least the nakago was at one time burnt and the blade is possibly retempered. This type of condition is not unusual for blades given to a shrine or temple.
