Note the flag and plum blossom! This looks to be a Manchukuo Imperial Army sword for noncommissioned officer.

Really? What are the red flags? [Honest question, not a challenge.]

              Thanks,

Its the number on the habaki and on the dragshoe. The 2 wire in the handle.

And offcourse the overall workmanship ,its poor.

Not a bad fake. As others have pointed out the numbers are a dead give away. I have a real one of these and they are kind of crudely made.

I believe these were russo japanese war period,or just after, and this time period has been known to have some very old blades in their scabbards...usually the d guard types have the best chance to find old blades in military fittings .This one has what I call a naginata type blade....if this is a fake, they sure fooled me,and went to a lot of trouble to make this style blade, as it appears old, and has a lot of patina, missing the chain, and appears to have a straight temper line.. did you take the blade out to see what the tang looks like.

Now, that's exactly what I was thinking -- I really love the geometry of the blade and -- except for the tip -- it has a semi-"kogarasu-maru" type of shape.

But I really don't know anymore ... unless we see the tang, as you suggest. Fakes are getting better.
