While visiting War Relics Shop in Milford Delaware, the owner showed me this flag that just came into the shop. The measurements are approx 8'5"X 12'8"multi-piece construction. It has many well done period repairs along the flags trailing edge. Definitely flown on a ship or naval base. Very cool. Enjoy.

IMO, even with period repairs. I just love
those hand sewn large Japanese ray flags.

(below) nice graphic and post war use example.

not certain if those are repairs or in the manufacture using up extra smaller pieces of fabric. Truth be known these are common. Every large ship had a flag locker with many flags kept in ready. As you can imagine they took a beating at sea & eventually needed replacing. Hard to display unless your single & then they make a great bed spread

Ditto on the IJN flag locker quantities during the war,
but IMO not all that many IJN flags survived the war.
Especially so for hand sewn large ray flags, few of which
I've seen over my 40+ years of collecting military flags.

about flag collecting ...

I believe they had a high survival rate as souviners either from
the flag lockers themselves or in post war Japan. Could be they
aren't as easy to sell or display.
IMO it is true that militaria collecting is more
prevalent in the the east, especially with the
big shows like the SOS. But I would contend
that WW2 German navy flags are "common",
and WW2 IJN are scarce in comparison numbers.
That is to say I've seen thousands of KM RKF's,
at shows and offered online, but maybe a few
dozen IJN examples, especially large ray types.
Likewise, large flags used to be hard to sell, so
maybe you have been seeing the same flags.

Again very cool. I'm wondering
how many hand stitches were used?
Maybe you could count them & reply?
Or at least say what the characters mean?
