Order of the rising sun first class

    Hello all,

I have been into collecting Japanese militaria for a long time, but have joined this forum for some advice. I've never bought anything on ebay before, but I saw this item, number 111076586744. It's something I've never been able to find before, so I'm looking for opinions on this item in particular, or experiences buying on ebay.

    Thank you for any input.

I think that's a 4th class, missing the ribbon. The neck ribbon orders wouldn't have that round loop.

In any case, I'd want to see more than just that one picture before deciding on a purchase of something like that.

      Hi Artie,

this piece looks like authentic 1st class (Grand Cordon) sash badge.
Most likely it was made somewhere between 1890 and 1910.

I wonder why seller posted only one photo of the obverse and no photos of the reverse ...

      Cheers,
      Nick

As mentioned over on WRF until we know the measurements and see both obverse and reverse photos in natural light it's premature to make any conclusive judgement in my view. Pictures and measurement have been requested and the seller states he will supply them shortly. Time will tell.

Till then here is the photo he has provided to date.

        Regards,
        Stu

This is Grand Cordon in the rare box "for nobles and foreigners".
              Standard box looks differently

Thanks! Also, I note the Grand Cordon badge has kanji on the Paulownia leaves, whereas the 1st Class does not. (Or, is this the case --kanji-- only for nobles and foreigners as well?)

                Thanks again,

All orders of the rising sun in all classes have same inscription on reverse of the paulownia leaf (or reverse of the breast star) "Order of Merit Decoration".
The auction house simply confused reverse with obverse ...

                  Regards,
                  Nick

As I said earlier this is 1st class badge from Meiji epoch.

"77mm from side to side (the widest point of the star) by 109mm"

Actually remains of the sash and no breast star around.

I`d say this one came from Showa epoch.

                              Cheers,
