    Very rare Japanese Diplomatic Dirk

Got an interesting one here. I found this Dirk in New Zealand. It was purchased in the early 80's in a small town (Ngarawahia) second hand/antique/junk shop by a friend of mine (a long time collector).

It was found with a 'J' Force Army uniform set (J Force was the Kiwi post war Occupation Force sent to Japan). The owner had died and his wife simply dumped all his military kit at the shop for a few quid.

I am certain it is not a fake. Other 'dagger guys' concur.

As you can see in the Fuller reference book, there are no other known examples.

It is a 1911 Junior Diplomatic Officials Dirk for the Government Of Formosa.

I have posted a request for information, or price expectation on the Daggers Forum, without much luck. They suggested I ask around here.

Anyone got any input that might be useful?

That' s a very nice Dirk. Original to boot.

Like the shark/ray skin handle and scabbard.

    Absolutely interesting piece of history.

    Thank you for sharing.

    Best regards,
    Taka

Great find! Looks like the real deal. You've probably already found most of what there is known about them. I'm sure there must be more out there, but most people wouldn't know what they have.

Great dagger! Fuller's book, although a great reference, is a little dated. These pop up from time to time on auction sites and do tend to command well over $1000 depending on condition, etc.

Thanks Tom. I tried to contact Fuller, but without any success. I paid just over a Grand for it, so I guess I haven't blown my money!

Thanks Taka. I may see if a Japanese specialist dealer might be interested in swapping it for a Katana or something.
