    Iwo Jima Grouping

Thought this would be of interest to the Japanese collectors due to the Jap Zero tire Remnant.
Wanted to share a great little grouping I picked up from the family of Wesley Bemis. A 4th marine division vet who saw service on Iwo Jima from the start on Feb 19th 1945 through March 16th 1945. A demolitions specialist and basic engineer. The grouping consists of his 4th marine division book – photographs – and documents to include his original marine discharge. The highlight of the grouping is a tire remnant cut off a Japanese zero while he was in Iwo Jima!

Very cool grouping. Do you know what specific unit of the 4th Marine Division he was in? I have the grouping of this Marine who was a Pioneer in the Pioneer Battalion of the 4th Marine Division during Iwo. Here is the link:

      Hi、

      The tire remnant is stamped:

      横濱護謨製造株式会社

(Yokohama Gomu Seizou Kabushiki Gaisha) - Yokohama Rubber Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

      This company is still present.

Now 横浜ゴム株式会社 (Yokohama Gomu Kabushiki Gaisha) - The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd.

By the way, excellent marine grouping!

      Thank you for sharing.

Thank you!! I knew it was the manufacture but had no idea what it said. I only found one other example of a zero tire (remnant) on the internet. I suspect not many exist let alone one with Provenance from Iwo Jima.

Other planes besides zeros used the same tires. No disrespect but many G.I.s didn't know exactly what a zero looked like. Great grouping!

In my experience dealing with US WWII vets, every Japanese fighter-type aircraft was a "Zero"; every German artillery piece was an "88"; every Luger pistol was "taken off a German officer at the Battle of the Bulge" . . . . . you get the picture.

Regardless, you have a nice grouping here and thanks for sharing it with us.

Guys thanks for the comments. I am keeping documentation with the grouping from the grandson stating his grandpa always told the story the remnant came from a zero personally I believe it based on the paper work evidence – either way I am pleased to have it in my collection !

                    Nice Grouping

Congrats on a nice IWo grouping. As a member of The Iwo Jima Survivors Association and Museum I'm always glad to see more evidence of that fateful day.
                    Very nice Score you made.
