Japanese War Flag For Review

Hello All,

I am hoping to get some comments on a flag I have just purchased. Should have looked on this forum before I had purchased the flag.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Hi Rick,

Perhaps it's just me trying to view them on an iPad but I find the images too small for reviewing.

As a general rule though the large kanji are across the top. If you are going to post larger images they may need to be rotated.

Japanese War Flag for Review

Can anyone rotate the pics so that the tabs are on the right? I'm not adept enough to do so with the iPad I'm using to view the flag.

I don't usually see that much kanji on a fake but I must admit that I have a concern at this point. The reason is because I see several kanji that are very close to some I recognize yet they are not quite as I am used to seeing them. Perhaps just a different writing style?

I'll check back later and see if anyone has been able to correctly orient the flag. Others with more experience than I will likely comment as well. Don't panic till they do ... I'm no expert ...just an enthusiastic student.

Rick, you may want to start comparing some of the kanji on your flag with those listed in the pinned reference thread at the top of the Japanese forum.

Yes, I believe that to be correct. Thank you.

As to the kanji, I'm still unable to reconcile the hand with anything I have seen before. Perhaps it's authentic but the slogans in particular seem to lack the style of others I've seen. Could it be that this was done in haste or on a soft surface? Just guessing here but it appears to have different weight brush strokes on the larger kanji.

I had a pretty good look at that flag. As a matter of fact, I was a bidder on it. It think its got a pretty neat look to it. It was a vet bring back as is being sold out of the US. I can see what Stu is talking about. Somewhat sloppy chracters, alot of writing with not a whole lot of variation, but I think its a good one. Its even got some legitimate "staining" to it, if I remember correctly.

edit: different handwritings, too. To the 3 o'clock of the Sun, abutting it, is this:
しるとするとはひとつなりばせがはりえい
Shiru to suru to wa hitotsu naribase ga HARIEI
"To know and to do ... One thing prevents it becoming so: "
Probably better English is: One thing prevents knowledge from become action: [arrgghh .... don't know that word]."

Hmmmm ... we need a native-speaker's HELP.

I am no Japanese flag expert. But every time I look at this kind of meatball flag with kangi writing, how can someone determine it is not modern copy but period flag?
