    NCO Katana for revieuw

    Hello guys,

I'm completely new in the Japanese sector but I always wanted to buy a nice fully original Japanese katana.
What do you think about this one, it has the right appearances, but is it OK?
    Any help is much appreciated

    Thanks

    Kind regards,
    Harald

I agree. This is a machine made blade although....all this type were. Even if you decide to purchase this type, you still need to find a smith made sword someday. I also wouldn't get too deep into this price wise. Most of this type sword I feel are over priced. Tip has a lot of wear. Ive seen lots of bushes and trees trimmed with this type japanese sword by vets kids through the years.

Is a price of 1150$ reasonable for this piece?

              Regards,

A year or two back I passed on one just like it for 200. but that was actually a decent price, I just didnt want it that bad, but I see them asking 500-to as high as 900 for one....for you I would say between 200 to 500. would be OK. Of course in negotiating you will want to mention the excessive wear on the tip...and as some may disagree who value this type sword higher...I am still passing on common type swords in preference to find a nice smith made vet found blade any time. Lets see what other collectors say....This is MY opinion from years of buying and selling some expensive swords right from vets ...but for a first sword...if it isn't out of line by price , I say go for it, and when you find a better smith made sword...then if you got into it cheap enough...you can sell it for a small profit, and get your money back to put toward a sword more desirable. At 1150. you will never get your money back....the seller is looking for a sucker IMO. caveat emptor.(read again what I said above as far as what to pay)

The sword pictured is the late war "emergency pattern" with the black steel tsuba.

With respect, I disagree. That appears to me to be an aluminum tsuka, top latch, iron tsuba version as introduced in mind 1941. More patterns followed before the end of the war.

Made in the Tokyo First Arsenal it's value in the current market would be about 600 USD provided the blade is undamaged by any edge nics, bends or twists.

                          Hello,

I have seen the earlier issue brass tsuba versions (both 9 and 11mm) go for over 1000 USD when their condition warrants it both on EBay as well as through private sales. The iron tsuba side latch version that followed the two iron tsuba top latch versions also goes for over 1000 USD as it is more difficult to find. Again, depending upon condition. The two iron tsuba top latch versions (2 and 2a as per Dawson) seem to be more plentiful and usually sell in North America for a little less. Around the 800 USD mark if one pays the regular retail asking price.

Perhaps the supply is limited in your part of the world and hence sellers can demand more?

As for them being available at the 200 dollar level, well, I'd like to find them at that price too.

Although none are currently on the Estand they are listed there several times a year and Paul Hogle has them now and then. Here is one currently on his site ...

                            for agrigento:

If you want to spend 1000. for a machine made sword like this , have at it, but in todays economic situation, this kind of sword is NOT a good investment. One must be careful that all we buy until the economy gets back to normal(which will be many years, if not a decade,) should be at prices where you can quickly get your investment back if necessary in case of emergency. I didn't say to make a profit, although that would be good, but I assure you I get around , and see items all the time, and like the one guy said , some areas yield more items than others, and one must remember that e bay , although if used as a barometer for value can at times be way off on some items, especially if items are shilled, and a newby is getting anxious .

I would pass if the seller is firm, as this sword , if it were mint, all the original paint was there(not just matching numbers)like it came right outof the factory, and not reworked or repainted only, and the blade had not been abused to wear the tip down like this one....and my opinion remains the same....as condition even in smith made blades has a standard according to its flaws etc. regarding prices.

Hunt the woodwork ask friends, and avoid prices like this on this kind of extremelycommon item, and only buy the best deal, and do not get too excited about stuff like this when it is the most common japanese sword found.....and It doesn't matter if you believe me or not, just don't say I didnt warn you. This sword IMO is over priced by twice what it should bring.

Lets say your car blows up next week, and you need several thousand to fix it, and you just bought this sword, the dealer will not give you your money back.....but he may give you 3 or 400...at most, after paying him 1150.(you been chinga'd) so I strongly suggest only paying what you know you can realize back if you all at once need to recoup. Smith made blades are in a different class than machine made, and I would pass on this one, and wait for one from someones family, and get off your duffs, get out and start talking to everyone you meet. in a year or two , you may find one, and will get not only a batter price , but one that has not been touched the wrong way by the nimrod, as it appears somwone was chopping trees with this sword. We agree to disagree, but for as many high dollar swords as I have found first hand I am a more seasoned buyer, and know what is a deal and what isn't. Some folks are just more easily amused than others.
Yes a sword dealer would buy this sword for 2to500.max, and would try to find a newby to dump it on at what you said, but if more than that, they would pass as I would. Buy smart, is like working smart, as work is money...do as you please, and when you find nice smith made blades , and may cost twice as much , that is a better investment . Paying retailfor common items is not what the fun about collecting is about, it is the hunt, and finding the best items for the least ammount of jack, and finding deals. Unless something is extremely rare, move to the next deal, and forget this one.

I have to agree $1150 isn't a fair price for an NCO in this condition at least if it's for sale in the US. If it's for sale in Europe I can understand the price. Let's say the seller bought it for about $700 plus shipping and since it's not an antique he had to pay about 30% more in customs fees and taxes at least here in Sweden so even if I myself shouldn't pay this kind of money for an NCO in this condition in the US or elswhere I can understand the asking price.
@ Hasse I just sold my last NCO's since my focus is on Gendaito but if you're interested in one I might know of one for sale in Sweden. Contact me if interested and I'll try to help.
                              Kind Regards
                              Daniel
