My introduction into Japanese militaria - a nice Yosegaki flag

    Hello,

I've been mainly collecting German militaria but I always had a weak spot for Japanese Yosegaki flags. Finally I found a very nice one on the e-stand and this one arrived today.

Next is trying to learn a bit of the Kanji and I could figure out the last 4 words from the bigger fat written vertical line which says "Everlasting fortune in battle". I must admit though when starting with Kanji it can be rather confusing, my head even started to spin after a while haha. But it's interesting

Anyway, here's my flag (pics are those which were used on the e-stand). More flags will follow for sure

          Hello Marcel,

          Welcome to the Japanese forum.

I nearly added that one to my own collection but have so many now I'm running out of wall space. I'm pleased it went to a good home.

Here are a couple links you may find useful in the future ...

          http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=493366

          and

          http://www.gethistorytoday.com/

The second is the link to Dr.Mike Bortner's site. He goes by MikeB here and his book is well worth purchasing. It's a fantastic resource and great read.

          Regards,
          Stu

Thanks gentlemen for the nice welcome in the Japanese section!

I already found the link to Dr.Mike Bortner's page as well as the Kanji thread yesterday when going through almost all threads on Japanese flags here on WAF. Costed me many hours but it was very nice to see so many nice flags. It helped me a bit as well with (trying) to read Kanji althrough, for an unexperienced eye, many of the symbols start to look like eachother after a while haha. Guess need quite some more time to feel comfortable with this language hehe. Dr. Mike Bortner's book will be ordered, seems like an essential for this specific direction of collecting.

              Best regards,
              Marcel

Edit: is there a thread on framing these flags? Couldn't find it myself. I would love to frame it but I don't wanna run the risk of damaging the flag because of sunlight or because of the frame itself or even the glass destroying the Kanji.
              Thanks for any help!

Glad you like the flag. That is a nice one if I do say so myself. I can't keep every flag I get, so I'm glad to send them to good homes with collectors who appreciate them.

HI Marcel, there have been a couple threads, or maybe just discussions regarding the framing, storing, and displaying of these great flags. You will see that when having a professional frame your flag, it can cost more than you paid for the flag. Its important to use a UV protective glass and all acid free materials.

Thanks for the reply Paul! Will do another search than because with the use of the search button I couldn't find the needed threads.
About the costs....well, I think it is better to spend a bit more and have it done in a good way so the flag is preserved well than to try and keep the costs low and by that perhaps damage a unique piece of history.
