    Help with Japanese Officer's Sword

    Hi,
I would like to ask for some help with a Japanese officer's sword.

I have carefully taken the sword apart and found that the tang is rusted. What is the best way to bring out the markings without altering the condition? I was thinking that a toothbrush with a light oil may do the trick. If there is someone that can see the markings and read them I would appreciate some help with a translation and approximate date of the sword. Here are some pictures of the tang.

    Thanks for any help.

A piece of bone can remove the rust.
It looks like old blade. 1400-1600

I agree with Gunto. The tang has been shortened hence the blunt cutting off through the signature. Many old family blades were modified to conform with military regulations.Unlike most western attitudes the Japanese would not leave a family heirloom safely protected at home. The thought being..This weapon was used in combat by my ancestors. Why would I leave it at home when I go into battle for the Emperor,my family, and my country? In my opinion this adds a special touch to the piece.Even though the tang has been modified I am sure someone on the forum will be able to help with the Kanji Until there is a full discussion it would be best if you did nothing to the sword. In my opinion one cannot Un-ring the bell.Nice piece congrats!

Thanks that's sound advice. I will leave her as is for now. Here are a couple more shots of the tang with different lighting.

The first three shots are of one side and the last is of the other.
