It is not an issue military cap that I recognize. Most certainly not a flight helmet of any sort either, but perhaps a civilian made cap that may have been pressed into military service if the star is original to it.
From the source, there is no reason to doubt that it has been in this configuration since the war. I wonder what all the leather is for. I thought it was to hold goggle straps.
As stated, it is period, but unknown to me at least, The long leather strap would be for size adjustment, but the 2 small snap ones are much too short to be functional,
It's an odd cap for sure. As you know most if not all Japanese headgear has some markings. The star insignia is a first for me. Never seen that style before much less on a cap. Could be a civilian winter ski cap. Anything is possible
