    Japanese Naval Cane

I'm trying to work a deal with the veterans family on a medium sized Japanese Naval rising sun flag and a very unique cane. Both were taken off a Japanese ship by his Step-father in WWII. The flag was not "unusual" but I have never seen a cane such as this. Any Japanese naval collectors have any idea? Sorry for the quality as its from a camera phone and not in my possession.

cane is likely not military. It reminds me of German alpine walking sticks used for light climbing

It looks like a cane to me, similar to the mountaineering ice axe. However, if you look closely, it is in the form of an anchor with one of the flukes cut off (probably made this way on purpose).

The seal-script says 海軍大臣 Kaigun Daiji. [Minister of the Navy]

More later ... dinner is being served and I'm being actively called to dinner!

When I looked at it today, it was clearly a anchor first impression with as I remember cherry blossoms on the sides. The flag was a textbook wool hand sewn rising sun flag(Navy).

Interesting item. One that's background is most meaningful and authenticated to the person (you) who was the first to acquire it directly from the veteran. I like unique stuff like this. Thanks for sharing.

              The name engraved is
              実三

              Jitsuzou

              Hinago Jitsuzou 日名子実三
              ULTRA FAMOUS sculptor

              珍しい幻の海軍戦傷奉公杖 二点
Translation: A rare "ghost" -- heard of but never seen before -- a Naval cane for Navy personnel who were injured in the war, presented by the Navy Minister.
[my note: rare because (1) it is associated with the Navy and Navy Minister, and more importantly (2) because of the FAMOUS sculptor.]

Here's a story about IJN Admiral Inoue Shigeyoshi, who had one of these canes.

[ As a Navy Commander Inoue [later Vice Navy Minister, later Admiral] was sent to Italy as a naval foreign officer. Enroute, he met the famous Hinago Jituzo. He asked Hinago for a cane and received one; he kept the cane in his entry way after his return from Italy.]

My wife's note: Just four years ago a book was published about sculptor Jitsuzo:

                  Stu,

                  Thanks for complimenting my wife.

My source in the above post was incorrect, here is the correct source with more photos of the cane ... you have to scroll waaaaay down the page:

Apparently there was an Army version too:

                  Thanks again,

Okay .... I got my notes mixed up. Inoue did meet the sculptor onboard enroute to Rome, but he did NOT receive a cane. My error (and my wife's upset with me because that reflected on her!) ....

The sculptor made a bronze bust of Inoue, and Inoue kept it in his entry way.

Sorry about the confusion. Anyway, there is a strong connection between Jitzuzou and Inoue.

I wonder why I got "cane" mixed up with "bust" ??? I guess I was too anxious to make the connection.

                    Apologies

Very interesting info! I missed the anchor fluke! Be interesting to find out more. I wonder if it was given to wounded retired ?
