Picked this up this weekend, the man who brought it back was a Marine. The sword had a broken wood blade inside but the blade is very well made. Was this a common practice after the war?

Hi Nole,
A wood tsunagi is commonly used to hold mounts together for display or preservation and is often associated to a wooden shirasaya, or resting scabbard, where a polished blade is stored when not in mounts. A well made tsunagi will be the same shape as the blade so as to properly fit the mounts and into the scabbard.
Regards,
Stu
