    Kind of a newbie question

    Hi Everyone,
I hope I don't catch to much flack over this being kind of a newbie. How does one tell if a tunic has been issued or not?
I know to look for like the name on the inside of the tunic but lately on a dealers website I have seen one that has rrank sewn on and it has field repairs done to it but no name on the inside.
Can anyone please help with this. I am interested in this tunic and I can post the link if someone wanted to pm me.
    Thanks for all your help
    Scott

judging tunics is extremely difficult for many reasons. Very few, in my opinion, tunics were issued without users/owners filling in ink stamps or labels on interior. Best signs are 1) overall wear/soiling etc on tunic & matching cond.on insignias 2) hand written name on interior. Here's the tricky part...tunics were often stripped of insignias & worn well after the war. These turn up often with post war reapplied insignias. 3) most tunics (98%) you encounter on eBay & for sale are mint/unissued/surplus tunics with post war added mint insignia 4) lastly it's important to judge how insignias were applied. I personally only trust "invisible" tight tack stitches in corners for collar rank tabs. Most post war insignias are attached with large, sloppy loopy frankenstein stitches & often with red thread. I have been collecting for many years & can only count on one hand the tunics I've seen with correct period applied insignias.I'm sure others can offer advice as well.

Issued tunics with original insignia are not common and as the previous member stated, if you've been collecting for years, you can pretty much count them on one hand. Not all issued tunics were named inside however. This is one of those areas of Japanese collecting that is difficult to describe and where some experience is required. There's lots of 'made up stuff' floating around now .
