One of my students brought this in and said her grandpa brought it back fro WWII. I really don't have any idea what it is or if it is even from WWII. Thanks for any help on this.

Don't know what the bag was for, but the large blue lettering says "Tokyo Asahi Shinbun." The red flag logo is (still?) used by Asahi Shinbun

Interesting. I would think that Kimura tai would be the name of the unit that the person belonged to. On the surface I would say that it might be some kind of senninbari, but I do not know why it would have a newspapers name on the outside unless times were getting tough for material. If you raise the item to a strong light, can you see anything that might be on the inside of the cloth-- any stitches, sewn-in coins, other Japanese writing? Is it possible to look down the length of the cloth from the opened end, maybe further clues?

The only thing I can think of is that this was a case for the Asahi Shinbun flag and flagpole, and it was owned by a company (or office) called the Kimura Group or Kimura Team. I don't think at all that this was a military organization.

Thanks for the replies and ideas. In a couple of pictures I show some writing on the inside ends of the bag. One is able to put his arm through the whole bag, so it isn't closed off. I wasn't sure if it was WWII or what. Does anyone have an idea what the outside writing, big blue letters say?

Ooops. I just reread the above comments and saw what the big blue letters say. So that is a newspaper? I'll have to do some research, I guess.
