These are WW2 vintage, but civilian issue from the Asahi Tabi brand. Although civilian by production, I am sure they also saw use in the army. German POWs interned in Japan after WW1 taught this company how to blend rubber. They were volunteers that wanted to work and actually commuted daily between the factory and POW camp. Their contributions were so appreciated that one of the Germans, became an official employee after being released and continued to work for them until his death, in the meanwhile playing a big role in creating the modern off-shoot of this company, Bridgestone Tires.
