    2 Japanese flags opinions please...

I Picked up one of these flags, and have the opportunity to get the other larger one. They look good to me, just want some reassurance from this community.

I don't think there is anything exceptional written on them, if you notice something unusual, unit, city etc. please let me know.

    Thank you,

(these 2 pics are from the flag I purchased.)

      silky smooth

I've got one that is quite similar. Is it made of silk?
Most of them were. It looks okay to me.

They both look good to me. The first one seems to be a smaller sized flag. Less common than the larger ones. What size is it? They both have the phrase "Ki Buun ChouKyuu" , prayers for everlasting fortune in battle, written on them in bold ink.

          Thanks for the quick replies.

-They are not silk, Cotton I think.
-The first one is the small flag, it measures 25.5 " x 20"

Both look authentic to me. Lots were made of silk but many others were Rayon and cotton was also a popular material for yosegaki hinomaru.

The second one has blood on it. Many times these were folded up, and carried in the helmets, so frequently they have blood spatter and stains on them. I am confident the writing is names of friends and family members and best wishes to kill the yankee dogs , and such other salutations. I think you better go snag the other one asap.

                  Thanks for the replies gentlemen.

juoneen, Im not sure if that's blood on the flag, it usually turns a dark brown color.

I will post pics of the flag if I can get it.

                  Regards,

Looks to me like faded and smeared "Hanko", or personal name stamps most often seen in red ink, placed next to peoples names.

I picked up the second flag...

I Picked up the second flag today, along with another one that caught my eye.

So, here are some pics of the second flag, and yes Paul G it is smeared hanko, a couple of them are still intact.

                      Size is 38.5" x 39" silk.

                        The third flag...

Lastly, here are some pics of the third flag. The face in the corner caught my eye.

                        Size is 32" x 27" on silk.

I find these quite fascinating, not often you have something so personal from someone who was there...not just a nameless medal or badge.

Again, if you notice something unusual, significance or further insight to these please let me know.

                        Thank you,

Nothing to add about the navy flag, but the army one is signed by many members of the army accounting school. The face is a Daruma http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daruma_doll

That last flag looks like it has a lot going on, neat!
Along with all the slogans, sigs., etc., it has Samuhara written in four characters around the "sun". See below for history on this phrase:

                            http://eos.kokugakuin.ac.jp/modules/...hp?entryID=631

Also, I am not absolutely sure, but it looks like someone signed their name or wrote a slogan in Korean Hangul at the bottom.

                            Thanks for sharing!

Samuhara is the Force in Star Wars, the force to maintain and restore natural order in the universe. It is also the chant to summon this Force for ones protection. Although it looks like Kanji, you will not find it in any Kanji dictionary, as it is not Kanji at all, but a special code used in Shinto called Shinji. It may sound far-fetched to use Star Wars to illustrate the meaning, but after all they share the same spiritual roots. Japanese historical sword-fight flicks are called Jidaigeki(Epoch drama) and from this word came Jedai, etc.
