    Japanese Army Leather Map case

    hi,
I show you a Imperial japanese Army leather map case. It was brought in Netherland from a Dutch veteran in the 40s and was picked in the Dutch East Indies (actual Indonesia). It was grouped with a IJAAF winter flight helmet for bomber aircrew but I don't know if Imperial Japanese Army Air force related.

    Probably from 16th Butai.

It is named to an Adachi at the Fortress Building Section at the HQ of the 16th Army in Java, according to the faint unit code. It is also dated 8th Dec. 1944.

Thank you, The exact unit was for me a mistery. The surname is midori, so complete name is Adachi Midori, and as you correctly say it reports "year 19 of showa" (1944) plus 8th december.

I'll add another photo asap, because on the other flap there is a print made with stencil of the name of veteran.

I don't think it is Midori, as that is a 99% a girl's name. A similar looking kanji, but too indistinct for me to read.
Or maybe it is the kanji for green after all, but as a boy's name it must be read for instance as Ryoku.

yes, Midori is a female name but for what I know rarely used as male name, probably as you say it is similar but not the same kanji.
However do you think is possibie to find info about him, starting from Adachi, from the date and its unit (HQ of the 16th is a small and closer group I guess)?

I started I little research, from wiki:

"On March 27, 1944, with the threat of possible landings of Allied forces to retake the Dutch East Indies increasing, the organizational structure of the Southern Expeditionary Army changed and the IJA 16th Army was reassigned to the Japanese Seventh Area Army. It remained headquartered in Jakarta as a garrison force as before."

This mean that probably Java was left and in december 1944 HQ was in jakarta.

              always from wiki:
"As the war in the Pacific progressed, the 16th Division was deployed to the Philippines and based in Manila as part of the 35th Army, within the structure of the 14th Area Army. However, as the war situation deteriorated, the Imperial General Headquarters ordered the 16th Division to Leyte Island for a final decisive stand against Allied forces. Of the approximately 13,000 men in the 16th Division, only 620 survived the Battle of Leyte, which included only one of its regimental commanders (who later killed himself).
Noteworthy commanders in the history of the 16th Division have included: HIH Prince Nashimoto (Morimasa), Minami Jiro, and Kanji Ishiwara."

              it seems a bit confusing.
