While at a recent show I acquired this rifle, I have never owned a Japanese rifle before so took a chance the dealer had 2 others one was a carbine and this example, both were classed as obsolete caliber this one has a proof house cert .

Hi Gary, check out this site, http://www.radix.net/~bbrown/japanese_markings.html Your mum has an interesting defacement. Is the sling origional? Slings can be quite desirable. Best, Bill Bourque

Very interesting rifle. I have a repro cleaning rod if you need one, but you can probably find an original if you search around for a while. They turn up occasionally on auction sites.
Your rifle is probably a very old one which was used by a school for training after it's military service. If you do happen to find ammo, make sure it hasn't been converted to fire blanks only.

Gary, There were some supplied to the UK for trails before WW1 ( an MOD training document for these came up on eBay some time back), not sure if they were marked or not I'm afraid.
I'm a bit concerned as to where you got this as It's not an obsolete calibre in the UK. I assume that you’re in the UK due to the Help for Heroes banner at the bottom of your post.

Paul,
Sorry, you do not have to be concerned about mine as it is a de-act .
The dealer had 2 others, a rifle and a carbine the dealer did not have a cert's for them but he said they were now both obsolete caliber (Section 58 ) and he could get a proof house cert saying so by re-submitting them, I did not go for them a because the had the mum's ground off and someone had varnished the wood work on them and they had no cert's, I know you do not need the latter but its always better to play it safe than take a chance any way Seems he (dealer) is in for a shock when he does submit them
