    IJN Collar Rank

I've noticed printed records suggesting the sakura blossom pips on IJN officer winter tunic collar tabs were white -- or more likely the frosted silver collor and textrure as seen on the cap above the fouled anchor button. And yet, virtually all actual pips I have seen appear to be an brownish alloy.

Anyone know if they were silver and then changed at some point, perhaps with wartime production? Also, would the alloy pips have ever been gilt-washed (shiny) to match the foulded anchor cap badge and naval officer buttons, or were they not? Were they ever brass?

Anyone? Color and metal of the blossom pips on IJN officer collars?

Was this a silver wash over a yellow-brown alloy? Most contemporary photos I have seen show this yellow-brown alloy, sometimes with what appears to be remnants of a silver or gilt wash that has worn away.
