    Large Rising Sun Flag

    Hello,

I purchased this WWII cotton Rising Sun flag.

It is 28" X 34" and has corners present.

What type of flag is this? Civilian or military? Navy or army?

    Thank you!

    Justin

Normally, the rayed "Rising Sun" Flags are considered "Naval" and the meatball flags are associated with the Army. This style and size would be commercial private purchase flags- actual military issue flags (Rising Sun types) are multi=pc construction with handsewn stitching....reinforced for "flying".

Nearly every Japanese members of the Armed forces carried a "personal flag"....often with signatures of friends, family, and sometimes unit members.
The Rayed flags usually weren't signed, though some were....but this style and size are considered "personal flags".

This would be considered a "Naval personal flag" IMO.

Red center is army (usually) and red off center is navy. These were military flags. Multi piece construction was for ship board.

The JMSDF still use the rayed flag today

Army, not navy, as I understand them. The offset orb would be the navy style. These small sized army battle flags were often carried by individual soldiers, as has been mentioned, in addition to the yosegaki hinomaru (Good Luck flags) that are more commonly seen.

Although less often found signed they do exist. Here's one of mine for comparison.

            Regards,
            Stu
