Advice on Donald Duck cap and tally grouping.

I am seriously considering buying this small group. Price is already decided, I would just like to know the thoughts of forum members. The seller is a member of the board, kaigunair, with close to 1000 posts here. Seems to a great guy and knows more than I do. I know the tally's are easily exchangebale on these caps, but I'd like to know

    Is the cap good?

What the tally on the cap says?

What the other tally's say. One tally is close to mint, other's aren't as you can tell. Appears to me slight wear on the cap?

kaigunair says the tally's, if memory serves me are for a IJN Sasabo base guard, IJN medical facility (hospital), A destroyer named "Ume" (which I did find listed in my referenece material). A Matsu Class heavy destroyer. I feel OK with everything, but I'm no expert. Any and all opinions and translations appreciated. I'm really interested in authencity of the cap, the tally ON the cap and the translation of the other 3 tally. Thank you all in advance.

The tally on the cap is the "Great Japan Imperial Navy" tally.
The top loose tally is for the Yokosuka naval base, the middle is for the Yokosuka naval hospital. The bottom tally I couldn't tell you. The cap itself is from Yokosuka, but unless the kanji is extrememly light and my screen is not picking it up, I would say it is unissued. Hope this helps.

Thank you. The seller, who seems knowledgeable, says it's for the Destroyer I named in the first post. So thumbs up from you? Thanks!

Thank you Jareth. I'd been waiting for your opinion. Its geatly appreciated. This will fill a nice hole in my collection (headgear wise). And I REALLY like the tally for the destroyer Ume. I have about the ultimate reference on WWII Japanese ships called Japanese Warships of World War II by A.J. Watts. It lists the Ume as a Matsu Class Destroyer built by Fujinagata, in service 24/4/44 and as "lost 31/1/45". Still appreciate all other opinions and comments.

The bottom tally says 大日本 Imperial Japanese 驅逐艦 Destroyer 梅 Ume
Except it's going right to left in the old style.

Thank you Papa Nambu!!!! Same exact thing the seller said. I don't know what uncut tallys go for that name specific ships, but I would have paid good for that piece alone. I'm happy with what I paid, but any opinion on the groupings value. I'll spill the beans if I get some fair opinions

Dave, thank you so much for that information. Knowing the history of the tally, (or the ship it was meant for and it's exact fate), makes it all the more special. It would be nice to know if it ever actually made it to the ship. I'll have to see it its been sewn when I have it in hand It would be nice to get a collection of different ship tallys. I'd love to get a grouping from the IJN carriers at Midway. I bet that would put a big dent in my wallet though. . Again, thank you Dave.

                        Regards,
                        Joel

So, as stated, I was the seller. Glad that the set is going to someone who is just as excited as I was.

FYI, I believe the UME stated in this thread is not the same as the one the talley is for. I think there has to have been an earlier UME warship, because, like the US Navy, the IJA stopped doing the names on the ships early on, maybe even just before the war. I'm pretty sure there was a post on when they official stopped putting the names on the talley's? If the UME discussed was constructed pre-war, then maybe, but I think the one sited was made during ww2. The UME tally is pretty near mint, and being most likely pre-war and over 70 years old, extremely rare either way.

Anyhow, I'd also love to find an akagi or any of the PH carrier talley's, but boy, I already have too many collecting interests in difficult-to-find (i.e. $$$$$) categories!

ok, so this UME might actually refer to a "KABA" class destroyer that served in the mediterranian in 1917. would make more sense to me. might also be why it is in such good condition if it was "traded" during that time with someone who kept it as a souvineer. So the talley may be closer to 100 years old!

Ships aren't exactly my area of expertise, but I found the info here:
                            http://www.naval-history.net/WW1NavyJapanese.htm

Thanks so much for the added info Jinichi. That would make sense that the writing is of the old style, to be read right to left. I'm glad it does say it was a destroyer on the tally though. I'd say you must be right, it was meant for the Kaba Class Destroyer Ume. Neat stuff! All of this extra documentation just adds to it's allure in my opinion (and value as a bonus!)

                              Regards,
