    IJN heavy cast shipboard helmet

I just realized that this one was never discussed here on WAF. I bought it on E-bay from the Birdman last year. I understand that the anchor has been replaced, but that it is original and correct for this type.

I appreciate all input on this one.

    Thanks!

Can Japanese speakers make out what the Kanji says on the rim?

It's a cotter pin. These helmets are also known as cotter pin helmets due to this liner attachment system.

Thanks, Dave. I appreciate comments. It seems some members are not familiar with this type of helmet. How common are these, particularly in this color?

                    Currently on e-stand..... :-)

I believe these have been discussed in detail awhile back

I would appreciate the link. I have searched WAF and not found anything, although I vaguely recall seeing the thread, too. Most of those helmets were grey, rather than green. Anyone else seen a green one like this? I am told these are not rare, but I have only seen pictures of a handful on any forum.

Here are some pictures which may show them in use.

I belive these clearly to be NOT cast and are IMHO pressed and hand finished , I have compaired and examined at least five . My reasoning is there are clearly press
creases +hammer marks to the only gently curved inner rim .casted metals of this thickness have no real protective value ,
                            Regards

Thanks for the info. What you say makes abundant sense. Anyone else seen or have period pics of these in use? The above attached are unfortunately not conclusive due to graininess of the images.
