This is an original Japanese "Meatball" float flag....if you notice the "puffy" edges...they are for "floatation"......this originally was attached to at telescoping pole and was part of a Japanese "Air Sea Rescue" kit....designed for downed pilot's (aircrew) to wave (with the pole) or float "flat" on the water so aircraft would know the nationality of the downed airmen....

Actually pretty scarce, but unappreciated (by most) flag....(also the thin silk tend to get weak with age....).

Certianly has "some" value...more than a plain "Meatball" flag certainly....it is missing the pole...which would keep it from the high end of the scale...but I'd think it should be between $100./200.00 as is.....depends....

It could easily have been brought to Germany by a Pacific vet. serving in Germany after the war.....

          Glad I could help....

As John mentioned the telescoping pole is missing. These came in a cloth case & were kept in a specific pocket in the army float vests.

                Jareth,

I know its like looking for a needle in a haystack, but do the poles ever turn up for sale? I have put the flag up for sale as Japenese items are not really my thing, but it would be interesting to see and aquire a pole for the flag

                  Hello,

I believe it must be more easy to find a full set than the rigt pole to complete the flag. One of them (minus the box/pouch) is for sale on ebay right now.
