    Hey guys,

never seen one of these flag and pole top kits, and wanted some help with translating the box.

    Best Regards.

No translation, but the box usually keeps a flag, mini pole, and filial and the kanji gives dates for when to hang the flag. It was a civilian homefront item.

side looks like 新舘落成記念 Shintate Rakusei Kinen
Shintate could be a name or it can be "New Building"
Rakusei Kinen is completion/finish commemoration, so it might have been given out when a new house or building was completed.

            Another Japanese Flag Box

Here is one which I recently acquired. It appears pretty much identical to the one posted above, except for the dedication "Kanji" on the side of the wooden lacquered box. As already noted and as I also understand, the characters on the front indicate significant civil or military patriotic dates and occasions when the flag is to be displayed.

I was told that the additional "Kanji" characters on the side contain those which would appear to indicate that it was a gift to someone from "Tenno Heika" - the Emperor. This could perhaps make it somewhat more significant - possibly indicating that this flag box might have been presented to a soldier.

There is a hole on the top reverse side for hanging the flag box on a wall or elsewhere. The previously-posted box appears to have had a hanging device applied for this purpose.

            The measurements are approximately: L. 24 cm. x W. 10.5 cm. x H. 9 cm.

All comments, feedback and translation assistance will be appreciated.

            Thanks and regards,

            John

                    Congratulations on your 88th birthday.

[NB: A person's 88th year is special and is called the "Rice" celebration (Beiju) because the kanji for rice can be disected into (top of the cross) (cross) (bottom of the cross): 八十八 hachi-jū-hachi = 88.]

Upon reaching 88, one can (could/) receive a decoration, the 8th Class Order of the Rising Sun. You have to ask for it at the ward office, though, and paperwork is required. Therefore, as one can imagine, more than a few are dissuaded from doing so. (My grandfather and mother in law were in the latter category.)
