need help with id of sword

A guy sent me this picture by phone so sorry for quality, but I have seen this type but don't know what it is or even if it is Japanese. He said his grandpa brought it back from WWII and told his dad it was Japanese. There are no markings on it anywhere. It doesn't look to be in the greatest of shape, but any help you may give will be appreciated.
