    Hi Steve,

Removing the peg is not difficult. However, they are tapered, so don't try to drive it through toward the narrow side. Once the peg is out hold the sword upright in one hand, blade facing away from you, and tap the back of that hand with a bottom fist strike from the other hand...see pics. Once you feel the blade jump a bit in the grip you will know it's loose. Then wrap a cloth around the blade and ease it out. Reverse the procedure to assemble. Never pull hard or without a cloth otherwise you will be referred to as three finger Steve.

    Regards,
    Stu

The photos depict a blade being drawn from a shirasaya (resting/storage scabbard) then taken down. Yours will be slightly more involved as there are the washers (seppa) and tsuba (hand guard) to deal with. They will just slide off. Make sure not to mix them up. When you are replacing the seppa ensure the tail of the locking mechanism is within the small rectangular hole in the each seppa as they are replaced.

As to values...quite a difference. A fine Yasukuni blade will run you 6K+ in fresh polish. A fine machine made blade will be a fifth of that amount. I may be a bit off in my figures, although I think not, but is serves to illustrate the point of why you'd want to see what you have by removing the tsuka (grip) and checking for kanji etc.

        Regards,
        Stu

Here is a link to the thread where Steve gets the tsuka off and learns what he has stumbled onto.

                Hi Stephen,

I wish I'd snapped it up when he figured 1500 would be a good price.

However, that would not pass the smell test (as my Dad used to say) and would have been tantamount to ripping him off. We will all just have to appreciate it from afar.

                Regards,
                Stu
