    Hi Jeroen,

Don't blame yourself. It's never the victims fault. Guys like cupman prey on folks and take advantage of them wherever possible. They are a parasite that is ruining much of this hobby. I'm sorry for your loss.

      Thanks stu!
I've bought this flag with 8 other flags, but luckely these are without any writings on it.

It used to be safe in the old days & say "came right from Japan!" Nowadays they are faking (if it's too good to be true ...) flags, humping up tunics with insignias & adding false provenance etc. I see bad things coming our way similar to the onslaught of reproductions & fackery in the German WW2 market.

i work al several years with tomas termote from belgium and in my opinion is he the person to go for japanese militaria in belgium.
all the items i have in my collection are from him and i must say he's honest and he have nice items.

Even if a flag comes from the family of a marine, it could be a fake.
In Hawaii, some Japanese were making souvenir flags and giving them to soldiers stationed in Hawaii during the 1940s.

I never trusted flags until I found one with an "inspected by joint intelligence" stamp in the corner. Besides, a flag could come from anywhere.

A brother of the flag featured in this thread has now shown up in Klaus Butscheck's Ratisbon auction in Germany. It is also signed by the same Captain Hiruma, but the real author is the faker, T. Kondo in Chiba, Japan. It is a fake flag, so stay clear.

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon, but I too have questions about this flag. The overall handwriting of the flag is way too neat. I usually look for the variations in the writing, which this one has none. Nick has a lot of very useful knowledge and his opinion should be valued.

Jeroen: don't feel too badly. My first flag was a real beauty, I thought. I posted it here on WAF in about 2007, and quickly learned of my folly. Hard to swallow at first, but this is how we learn. I hate that "learning" part! Hang it on the wall to remember to be careful in the future. You don't want to sell it to anyone else anyway, unless as a reproduction.

Thanks again to Nick for his reliable expertise. Anyone with a slight knowledge of Japanese writing can see all of the kanji was written by the same hand. Ihope you can receive a refund

The reason why this old thread was bumped was, because its twin brother just came up on a German auction run by Klaus Butscheck. He is a highly reputable dealer, but has no background in these items(flag even shown wrongly flipped, from the rear), so I warned him of the fact. He replied that as it was a consigned item, he needed some backing up about its dubious nature. The case of the flag on this thread had been long closed. The point was about the lag shown below. Klaus had since then changed the description to say it was a post-war written flag, so that case is also now closed.

Thank you for your watch Nick. I spotted the first flag but I have to admit the second one didn't jumped to my eyes. Good to see it reached to a honnest seller this time.
