    Leather Map case

    Hello Gentlemen

I picked up this map case with a bunch of other stuff the other day. I like it. It is in pretty good condition and has an interesting belt clip.

    All the best James

What about the writing inside the flap? Can any one help? A name perhaps or a unit?

岩 ? 吉一 If it's going left to right, as would normally be the case for this time, it would be Tadayoshi ??-iwa If left to right, last name first. "Yoshikazu Iwa-??" Maybe Iwaguchi 岩口
You're really not giving us much to work with on that kanji with the damage. as for the smaller writing, I can't make enough of it out to do any good.

and two more - may be too far gone in which case the owner of this map case will remain a mystery.

Many thanks for your help - you guys are terrific

Might be Kuchiiwa 口岩 but that's a surname, and Japanese normally write the surname first, so that doesn't work for the normal old style right to left writing. If it's going left to right it could be 岩口吉一 Iwaguchi Yoshikazu, Iwaguchi being the surname. But that kanji with the damage could be something else. The other smaller writing is just too far gone for me. Someone fluent might be able to figure it out from the visible bits, more likely if they could see it in person, but this is as far as I can help you.

Papa Nambu. Thank you for spending so much of your time on this. As I said before - terrific.

Anyone know any tricks for helping the script to stand out?

                Many thanks

It's written from left to right and the name is either Yoshikazu Iwata or Iwaguchi. The line above his name mentions Batallion Headquarters 大隊本部. I'm sure it could be read when seen in person, but that's about it from the photo.
