    Japanese soldiers flag

This is not my area of collecting however I have two Japanese flag which my dad brought back from WW2. He served with the US Coast Guard as a Carpenters Mate 3rd Class abroad a Navy troop transport the Gen,. W. H. Gordon AP117 and it was in Yokohama that he picked up these flags.

The first flag is I imagine a personal soldiers flag, it is silk with the gold corners still in tact. The second it printed on light weight linen.

Any help in translating these would be most appreciated.

    Regards

    Jeremy

        Thanks for the input.

Is there anyone else who can point me in a direction for getting these translated?

Based on past threads there appear to be quite a few of these in collections and I am wondering what sources people typically use for deciphering the Kanji.

        Regards

These are both a little strange. The first one has very odd style of writing. I think it might be either a wartime fake (GIs writing on a plain flag to make it more valuable to trade to troops in the rear, often copying writing off a real flag) or just someone trying to be fancy. The middle kanji say "certain victory". Most of it's too weird for me to make out.

The second one has no tabs. The writing looks better, but still just doesn't look right to me. I don't know what to make of it.

Mike Bortner (WAF name MikeB) has a translation service through his web site.

I found this one while searching old flag threads and decided to bring it back up in the hope someone might comment further.

The handwriting on the first flag is legitimate, but writing in the sun and all done in one hand makes it quite suspect overall. Unless it comes with solid provenance the odds are against you. One should avoid flags with writing in the meatball, as that was rarely done in practice yet the Japanese fakers know Americans love them.
