Hi,

Tell Alex that the medal looks good to me. When you find these, they are often in great shape and can be "questionable" just because of the near mint condition. Some have some minor spots where they are toning in the recessses.

I would need to see the whole case to comment on that, but assume it's probably good as well.

There are fakes of this award, mainly the gilding of the lower 7th class (silver) award, but the medal here looks like a genuine 6th class Kite to me.

According to Nakata’s 2009 catalog, Nakata is making examples of the 1<SUP>st</SUP> through 7<SUP>th</SUP> class Order of the Golden Kites.

Since the examples in the catalog appear to be of high quality, has anyone handled any of the Nakata Golden Kite examples and if so what would one look for when comparing Golden Kites?

Hi Eric,

Never heard of, or seen this Nakata catalog. If you have it, can you post an image of the page showing these copies?

In the past, the copies were restricted to the higher-end pieces, i/e: 5th class and above, but what I understand, the copies were quite evident once examined in-hand. Even the past attempts at artifically toning the silver 7th class to make it appear more golden and sold as a 6th class award were pretty easy to distingush from originals.

If this is a copy, then it's a new generation in Japanese awards. Personally, I don't think they have started copying at this level yet, as originals are still fairly easy to find if you exercise a bit of paitience. It will be curious to see the catalog though.

Alex,

I started a thread over at GMIC with hopes to get some more people looking at this Kite you asked about. I used one of the PIC's you posted and linked the catalog site.

Hopefully someone will know more and you can get some better answers. I also wanted to let those other collectors know of this catalog and possible problems it may pose for future purchases.
