            the undercoat used on japanese helmets was red/orange, I'm in the process of slowly striping two IJA helmets that were re-issued post war and have only found this out recently (there being striped for repair and fitting out for re-enactors).

              The army did use a red/orange primer for a period of time. Don't know the time frame. This helmet has the red/orange on top of the standard paint.

                Interesting lid.....I agree it looks like a period paint job. If you look closely you can see the same type of brush strokes with the red pain over the brown that you find on regualr brown painted army lids.

                And thanks Nick,I had never heard that before.Very interesting to know.
