Front insignia has been (sloppy) replaced. PO stripe also looks collector added or at least was messed with at some point. I would bet it is collector done. Send this cap back. It is pretty much worthless in this state. These caps are easy to find in excellent condition. They are affordable as well. I think there is an overpriced one on the e-stand at this very moment. I also know of a few dealers who have some as well. Can you provide a link to the e-bay sale?

It looked okay in the pictures at auction.

Front emblem should be machine sewn and not appear so sloppy. While PO stripes were period applied like seen on this example I just don't get a warm feeling from them. These stripes have been added to caps by collectors for years now. Scroll down to the IJN caps on this http://www.germanmilitaria.com/Japan...Japanese1.html page and take a look at them. That is the best way to see what I am talking about. Some other dealers have them as well.

I can see what You mean.
Could the PO have added the stripe himself?

Yes, but you never know. The fact that the front insignia was added casts a shadow on the stripes. Like I said the stripes have been added to these for some time now. Forget about the stripes though. The meat of this cap should be the insignia. It has been replaced on this cap. There are just to many questions for a cap that is easily found in good shape for fair prices. Spend a little more and get a quality example. You will never have to bother yourself with such questions after that. Then you are free to enjoy it for what it is. You should be able to find one for around $300. $350 is top dollar imo.

I agree with Scott & the others. Not a cap that lets you sleep well at night Be patient & hold out for a better example. The cap Russ posted link to displays "correct" application of stripes & insignia.
