Here are my to captured flags. I bought them on e-stand a while ago.

    Nr.1

The Marines wrote on the flag upside down. I guess this is a Japanese Name?

looks like cardboard letters under the stitching:

Just did a quick google and it seems Arthur W Kleiner is still around as of 2008

          Captured flags.....

Your flags reminded me of a project I tackled back in about 1989. I had purchased a small (2'X3') nazi flag from a local antique dealer that had many American soldier's names and hometowns written upon it. I compiled a name/place list and then set about calling the long distance information operators to see if any of the names still matched the towns. I found a number that actually still lived in the hometowns listed on the flag's front. I placed a call to the first name on my call list and the line was busy. I called the second name which turned out to be a fellow who would later become a good friend of mine. I introduced myself and explained who I was and why I was calling. The now aged veteran was a bit taken aback by the call, but as I read a number of the other names from the flag, he began to open up. One of them in fact he identified as their company dentist! The poor dentist was a fellow who cracked under the stress of combat and had to be sent back to the States.
Over the years, I was able to contact many of the members in this unit and later was made an honorary member. Their unit landed at Normandy and battled all the way to Berchtesgarten. I would encourage you to give it a shot and see if you can find anyone listed. I eventually sent the flag to my friend so that he could again see his signature written in black fountain pen on the round, white disc. His local newspaper did a story on him and his War exploits at that same time. He kept the flag just long enough for a picture to be taken, and then sent it right back to me. It made him very nervous that I would take the chance to mail the flag to him. I told him that I thought he could be trusted. He was a heck of a nice guy, God rest his soul.......mikeb

MikeB that is a great story!
No, sadly i have not been able to locate any of the listed Marines. I always though about trying to do so. You guys motivated me again to give it a try.
Would also be great to find a USMC Jacket with one of those names printed on.

Is someone able to translate the words that are written from top to bottom on the right hand side of the "Saipan" flag?
The top slogan is easy, i could find it easily in MikeBs great book!

Capture flags are a very unique one of a kind items that grab a piece of history that other things do not. I really like them.

                  Hello,

                  2. James Gallagher / Schenectady, New York

                    Great flags!

I see on the first one that 'New Zealand' is written around the Hinomaru. The 2nd Division Marines were located in Paekakariki (north of Wellington) in two camps: Camp Mckay and Camp Russell.

My grandparents befriended several of the Marines, and they used to have them home for home cooked meals. In return, they would bring with them all sorts of baking goods etc so my grandmother could make them cakes. Several of the Marines they got to know were killed, but a few survived the war and kept in touch for many years. I have an interesting story about one of them which I might start a separate thread on.

If you google the camps, you can get some information and pics.

Should you decide to sell the first one at any time, I would be most interested due to the NZ connection - please let me know!

                    Regards

                    Russ

Great flags! I have one as well, named to H.B.Hood from L co. 3rdBn 4th Marines, the flag most likely was captured on Okinawa from what I have found, I was able, with some help, to find him but he had passed away, he was from Pheonix AZ. Definatly try and find some of these men, they migh share some good stories and maybe be able to give you some history of the flags.

Thank you all for the nice comments.
I have only been able to translate a small part of the Japanese characters in the upper left corner
(they are upside down). "8340", maybe a full translation would allow conclusion on where the flag might
                        have been captured?

                        Best,
                        Chris
