    Imperial Japanese sword Gendai "Morinobu"

MERRY CHRISTMAS to the moderators and members!

I purchased this sword recently and would like to share the photos.

here is the notes by the seller:-

This is a Japanese WW II Army officer`s sword in mountings. The blade is signed "Minamoto Morinobu saku kore Kao" , dated Showa juhichi-nen juu-gatsu kichi-jitsu (Oct. 1942) Higo Futami junin (lived in Futami, Higo)".

Morinobu`s real name is Terada Iwao was born in 1910, studied under Moritaka 12th generation Kongo Byoe school, lived in Kumamoto prefecture.
Listed in John Slough`s book page 116 and Rated 1 million Yen gendai smith.

This signature date is same year and month with John slough`s oshigata sample.
The blade is in old polish but in near mint condition.

The temper line is wide gunome temper with choji ashi active pattern throughout the blade and has deep temper at the tips. The forging grain is tight itame-hada and no forging flaws. There is no bend, no nicks, no crack and cutting edge is razor sharp.

The scabbard is aluminum scabbard shows age but no dent, no bend and in good condition.
The handle is tight fit and tsuka-ito wrapping is in good condition. All the metal fittings are original, tsuba and seppa are no numbers.

The lock mechanism works fine. It is beefy, wide and healthy blade. The blade measures 25 1/2" cutting edge, 1 1/4" width, 1/4" thickness at the notch and 40" in the mountings.

                        Nice looking sword Ian.

The temper line on your sword is one of my favourite types. Aluminium scabbards are not commonly encountered and even more seldom without some damage. Aluminium scabbards certainly make the sword "feel" a lot less cumbersome than swords fitted with the usual steel scabbards.

It seems that this sword maker also uses a personal kao (personalised Japanese character) after his signature and the lacing on the handle is finished so as to retain the pommel. Both features not at all commonly seen.

                        Congratulations.
