    Japanese Army Wood box

I recently picked up a rather large PTO vet bring back grouping of Japanese items. This wooden box was among the group, just wondering if anyone knows what it was used for originally and a value. The vet wrote his name and address and sent it home to his parents during the war. Box measures 8 1/2 by 4 by 2 1/4 inches. I plan on listing it for sale on the estand .Thanks.

          box thoughts

A tough one. Thought it might be for some type of optical equip at first but size and absense of wood inserts inside make me wonder. Also, no indication of a spec plate or remains of a paper label so probably not. Construction looks Japnaese. They made boxes for everything and still are into containerizing things to this day so could be a box for anything. Looks like the vet put some extra nails or screws to keep it together when he sent throught the mail system and removed them when it reached destination. Box originally may be non-military issue. email me a pic of everything else - perhaps I can shed some light on other items - happy holidays!
