    E-bay IJN Helmet

There have been several bad/messed with IJN helmets on the bay of late.
    1. This one is funny. You just have to love this seller. He gets more untouched "Vet pick ups" then anybody on earth. This badge that he makes such a big deal about uncovering for the first time since WW2 is just plain bad imo. Cover is shot. helmet would be nice if not for the badge. Helmet also has the Naval style touch up stripe. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

    2. This guy was telling me this helmet was picked up on Tarawa along with an SNLF kit lol. Yea right!

    3. This one was interesting. Badge is curious. The last example out of Australia had an identical badge. Otherwise a decent example. http://cgi.ebay.com/JAPANESE-NAVAL-L...item3ca8504c54

    4. Oh yea, this guy. I would have to see a pic of the badge. He just cannot be trusted imo. Chinstraps have been played with as well. I do like the fraction. This one is probably the best one of the four which is sad. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Note that # 3 has a subtle [sic] leather liner. That adds at tleast $150 to the value. I hate those non-subtle, ostentatious liners.

Scott, thanks for posting these. That was a nice one David. I've seen that helmet insignia before on #3. Curious variation but it looks legit. Strange variations (caps & helmets) have come out of Australia & New Zealand vets. I like that cover insignia variation on #4

Jareth, I picked up one of these Naval covers with the same exact anchor badge variant about 5 years ago on Ebay for $600 (plus an original net - The sellers pics were all blurred, so I just took a chance which paid off nicely. Interior was correctly stamped etc.) I remember I sent you pics of it, and you liked it alot. Since then, I have seen one other identical cover. Todd

Holy smokes David. I did not even see that one. That would be the pick of the litter of the first 5 we talked about here imo. I really like it. I have been working a lot. Wish I would have seen it. I like the liner in #3. The linear indention's around the circumference of the liner pads is an early war trait imo. I think it really should have had a brass anchor. The badge has the look of a raised brass but material looks like metal/steel. I have seen badges like #3. What bothers me is the last few to come from Australia have been this exact type, finish, patina, ect. I could just be paranoid. That is probably the case but....This one was the catch of the year. While not an original set the cover is oh so mint it could have easily brought 4-5K just for the cover . http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT
            Forget about the helmet.

Did anybody here get the helmet David posted the link to? The more I look at it the more I love it. That thing is totally untouched. Also has just a great look to it. Would love to see more/better pics of that one. Nothing looks wrong with that cover out of NY either. I would like to see the inside of the cover behind the insignia just to be sure. The seller has re-applied insignia and claimed original in the past. One of these was the subject of a heated debate here recently. CG had a really nice example of one of these covers a few years back. Had a legit rope net on it if I remember right.

Todd, yes I remember that cover with anchor insignia variant! Post a photo here when time permits. As Scott mentioned there was also a very nice one from Collectors Guild that now resides in CA. Another collector in CA. has at least two of that insignia variant as well. It's next on my list! The helmet David posted link to was nice but was only lacking some nice hand written kanji that's always nice addition. Scott, I'm glad you like my new cover

Yea, 3k for the helmet, cover, & green two stripe officer cap. You made out like a bandit. If you would have pulled your usual and made him wait a month or two for payment it would have been mine. I knew you would make that happen though. That was a steal at that price. To the victor go the spoils.
                  Congrats, Scott

Figured it was one of my good friends slandering me on the deal Sometimes (surprise!) I actually have the cash on hand. For your information the seller set the price. You'll get the next one.

I liked the helmet I posted the link too and was debating on using the buy it now he had on it...decided to just take a chance and place a bid BUT should have known better...as Jareth said, its always nice to have writing on the inside but still a nice original example. If someone did get it, would love to see better pics of it. Congrats Jareth on a very nice addition to your collection. These things are disappearing off ebay like crazy LOL...David.

I did not slander. Just made a bigger offer for just helmet/cover. The helmet gods were on your side. I PM'ed him when it popped up but got called out to work minutes later. He is a nice guy. He was true to his deal with you. I believe you have said many times that "All is fare in love and e-bay". Glad a member here got it if anybody had to. It is a beauty . I never know which way you mean these ""? This icon is a personal joke between Jareth and I lol. Congrats on the cover.

Yea, the way the past few months have went for Naval helmets I think it was not bad to think it would not sell for that. It does appear to be a screaming untouched example though. If I had seen it I would have pulled the trigger on it. I love the look of it. Untouched examples like this are few and far between as we all know. That last one you got.... Man what a beauty.

OK slander might of been too strong a term but telling/warning the guy I'm a slow payer etc....and my favorite quote besides "buy the item, not the story" is "it's all fair in love, war & eBay' It really comes down to just being in the right place at the right time. Wishing you Tracy & Cheyenne a very Merry Christmas.

You are a prioritize-er. One can fall at either end of that spectrum. You gave him a date for payment. If you did not live up to it.... I told him if he got tired I would buy, immediately. I am a man. I will be honest about what I said. I knew you would make it happen. How could you not? I was not the only player in that game. I am sure it was all the usual suspects. It is the same group that bids on all the high end stuff. He had guys coming out of the woodwork for that cover. You have to admit it. If that auction would have run it's course where would we have taken it? There is no telling what he would have got for it. If the auction ran it's course and you won I would not have contacted him. You got him to pull the auction early and did not have the cash to pay him. It's not like you won it after it ran it's course. It is nothing you have not done and will not do in the future. I am fine with it. Really I am. Like I said I am glad somebody here got it. Forgive me for mis-quoting you. "All is fare in love, war, and e-bay". I Hope Dorthy, Deven, & you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year as well.
