    Insignia sewing

    Hello,

I have had this Japanese jacket for quite some time. I am quite sure the insignias where applied post war,
the thread which was used to sew it so the Jacket glows under UV light. But i am wondering if the way the
insignia are sewn to the Jacket is correct or not? Is this the correct style (large distance between stitches)?
I have seen some other Japanese uniforms lately and all hat the insignia applied this way.

    Any info is greatly appreciated

    Thank you!
    Chris

My opinion is original insignia post war attached. Finding a named, issued tunic with period applied insignia is rare.

Thank you Jareth. Another member suggested by PM it might be original attached insignia but it was washed and
that is why the thread glows. The threads of two buttons of the tunic are also glowing, but look absolutely
identical to the ones that don't. Very strange.

I should clarify...it's just "my opinion" as to how the insignia is attached. With Japanese militaria there are few givens & lots of surprises. It comes down to personal preferences regarding what you'd expect (like to see) regarding collar tab/insignia attachment. I feel most comfortible with tiny, invisible style tack stitches & not the large Frankenstein loop stitches in green or especially red thred (bad sign!). Tunic stands a best chance of having original applied insignias if it has hand written owners name & is a worn/issued tunic.

Japanese patches were often "tacked" on, as they were in the habit of removing their insignia when the uniform was laundered, and then reapplying it. Collector's tend to frown on roughly applied patches, so even patches that came with a tunic might end up being reapplied more neatly to please the collector market.

As Jareth mentioned, finding a jacket with the original ranks still attached is very rare. The ranks on this example are original, but highly unlikely to be period applied however.
