Hello guys , i would like to be able to read the kanji on items that i find and be able to possibly help others .any suggested reading would be helpfull ,thanks in advance

John: for some reason you can't seem to catch a break on this forum when it comes to translation help. Who did you irritate off? I'm with you ~ if there are any books or web sites that would help the novice with some of the more common kanji related to militaria I would love to know about them.
I know that there are only a couple o' thousand kanji; how hard can it be?
I would love if there was a kanji OCR system. But seriously, how 'bout it, gang? We are simply attempting to help ourselves learn, and stop bugging you guys for every little translation. Is there any kind of KANJI FOR DUMMIES book?

I wish to engage the experts on the fine art of kanji , if there is not help to be had , i will find the books eventualy and learn it myself . Its a tough crowd...lolComment

Hey all,
There is a really handy Japanese/English dictionary of military terms including kanji for the terms that was first compiled I believe either during WW2 or after. I will have to dig it out and will add in the details of the book, authors, title when I get the chance. The dictionary is quite thick and costs a pretty penny unfortunately, about $120. I picked mine up at a bookstore in Tokyo a few years back, but the dictionary might be available on Amazon or other places and may even be significantly cheaper. I will be back in a day with details.

I am pretty much in the same boat. Found the following sites quick, but don't even know enough about kanji at the moment to know how good they will be. The seem to be free and rather useful, though.

Here are the details on the dictionary:
It is called literally, "A Dictionary of Military Terms".
It was compiled by three majors: Major H.T. Creswell, Major J. Hiraoka, and
Major R. Namba
The first edition came out in 1942. Facsimile edition: July 2001
It is English to Japanese in the first section, then reversed in the second half of the book.
It gives the romaji of how to pronounce the term and also gives the kanji
equivalent. Really quite helpful. The only big problem that I have found with
it is the kanji are sometimes too small to make out in detail and seem to be blurry at times from the printing process. Hope this helps.

I have a book that might be helpful, I recently picked it up at an estate auction...Haven't had a chance to dissect it, but did notice it had a section on Kanji characters and how to interpret it.
After work I'll try to download pics on this site

There is a book published during WW2 about how to read Japanese dog tags and such, and it can be downloaded for free. I have sent the link to people before, but now I can't find it. I'm pretty sure it was an Infantry Journal publication.Comment
