An example of the effect of loose ito tie. Quite possibly a field fix by the original owner. I have handled enough of this form of mounting over fourty years to recognize this problem. This also likely accounts for the missing menuki although it was present at one time evidenced by the wrap. The ito does show some age and to the best of my knowledge, this thinner form of ito used on these mountings is not presently available for rewrap. In the end, this is one of those things for which there will never be a definitive answer. It is what it is-nothing less or nothing more.
