Interesting little item. Maybe the kind of thing you'd find tucked into a senninbari?

What's it made of? Looks like iron with a bronze wash on my monitor.

          Regards,
          Stu

                Hi John,

Senninbari are commonly referred to as 1000 stitch belts although they can also be in the form of caps and vests with stitching. Some with pockets for charms etc.

                Have a look here...

This charm came from Mount Kurama. Kurama-san (yama) is a mountain to the north-west of the city of Kyoto. The Kurama Temple, founded in 770 as the guardian of the northern quarter of the capital city at the time.

middle: BISHAMONTEN - God of War & Warriors
Also called Tamonten, The Black Warrior
                    Guardian of the Northern Quarter

left: don't know this one could be a god that protect the local ground.

unknown item found in the effects...

Charms like this were and still are fairly commonly seen among the Japanese. They could be purchased at shrines or temples and are similar to any of our good luck pieces (religious medals, etc.) Stu is correct too that these are often found in senninbari or one-thousand stitch belts. There are other forms of senninbari items, but the haramaki or belt in many cases has a good luck pouch in it that accomodates the charm or other small items. Charms like this are also found sewn in-between the layers of cloth in the senninbari sometimes as opposed to being placed in the pouch. These often come up for sale on Ebay. mikeb

thanks for that info as well mike , i should ask the seller if the belt is among some of the effects of the marine who liberated the items.
