The Sennabari ...is like a belt that goes around the waist of a japanese soldier...I believe Sennabari stand for A Thousand Stitches... im probally wrong...it was a good luck item...i believe each stitch was dont with a prayer,I think.....here is a ww2 era image of woman making the belt for the solder...and then an example of one....sone of the are VERY VERYYYYY artistic...with tigers and screnary....maybe some members can post some examples of there own belts they own!!(Sorry if im totaly wrong about the info,)

Hi John,
Senninbari are commonly referred to as 1000 stitch belts although they can also be in the form of caps and vests with stitching. Some with pockets for charms etc.

This charm came from Mount Kurama. Kurama-san (yama) is a mountain to the north-west of the city of Kyoto. The Kurama Temple, founded in 770 as the guardian of the northern quarter of the capital city at the time.

Charms like this were and still are fairly commonly seen among the Japanese. They could be purchased at shrines or temples and are similar to any of our good luck pieces (religious medals, etc.) Stu is correct too that these are often found in senninbari or one-thousand stitch belts. There are other forms of senninbari items, but the haramaki or belt in many cases has a good luck pouch in it that accomodates the charm or other small items. Charms like this are also found sewn in-between the layers of cloth in the senninbari sometimes as opposed to being placed in the pouch. These often come up for sale on Ebay. mikeb
